Dev Team’s 1.1.3 jailbreak for iPhone / iPod touch now available

January 28, 2008 by imods

If you’ve got a certain brand loyalty to the official iPhone Dev Team then take note, they just released their own special flavor of the 1.1.3 jailbreak for iPhone / iPod touch. We guess that with the splitter version already outed (and its secrets revealed to Apple) there was no sense in keeping it under wraps any longer. The hack requires a v1.1.2 jailbroken device with the BSD Subsystem v1.5 or greater installed — it does NOT upgrade your baseband. All the usual cautions apply hacker-boy so be careful out there, we haven’t tested… yet.

Out of control satellite “weeks” away from slamming into Earth

January 28, 2008 by imods

Good news, everyone! According to reports, a US spy satellite which has lost power and propulsion is weeks or even months away from striking Earth. Officials say that the space junk — which can now no longer be controlled and could contain hazardous materials — is due to come smashing into some location on our planet’s surface, but they can’t really say where. “Numerous satellites over the years have come out of orbit and fallen harmlessly. We are looking at potential options to mitigate any possible damage this satellite may cause,” said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the Nation Security Council. Government agencies are still considering options such as shooting down the stray equipment, though they say they’d be just as happy to let the potentially radioactive / alien-filled hunk of metal crash into a small village in a developing country.

Lumin’s MultiTouch display does… uh, multi-touch

January 28, 2008 by imods

at CES — is driven by Lumin’s proprietary software, and allows you to do all If you’ve absolutely, positively got to have a multi-touch display system right this second, look no further than the Germany company Lumin and its creatively named MultiTouch. For an undisclosed price (available on request) you and your loved ones can be pawing all over the 42-inch, 1024 x 768 display, which is powered by a Mac Mini and can be coupled with Apple’s wireless keyboard and mouse. The screen — which is quite similar to the LG.Philips display we got our mitts onSurface-esque manner of tricks, like zooming, rotating, and panning with various finger / hand combinations. The company also appears to be offering rear-projection, front-projection, and “shaped” screens, though none of those seem to be sporting touch capabilities. Check out the super-cool video after the break and see what’s happening over there.

Deliver a keynote like Steve Jobs in ten simple steps

January 28, 2008 by imods

Are you a CEO hoping to “step it up,” “knock it out of the park,” and generally “take it to the bridge” — old-school style — but you can’t seem to work the magic? Well, BusinessWeek has got just the thing for you: a ten-point plan on how to deliver a presentation like our main man, Steve Jobs. Breaking it down from “set a theme” all the way to “rehearse, rehearse, rehearse,” the cats at BW lay out everything you need to know to shatter sales records, hike your stock, and innovate the hell out of a keynote. Of course, they don’t advise you on choice of outfits (we suggest jeans, sneakers, and a turtleneck), products to launch (how does iPhone 2 sound to you?), or how to properly execute a “Boom!” (“Boom!”) — but we’re pretty sure you can suss those details out on your own. If you want the full breakdown of tips and tricks, including how to properly appear excited about your own products, hit the read link ASAP. To help you along, we’ve included a clip of Jobs doing his thing after the break. Boom!

16-year-old converts gas truck to electric, reminds us of our wasted youth

January 28, 2008 by imods

We don’t know about you, but we were doing far, far less productive things than Andrew Angelloti when we were 16. The green-minded youth — a forum member over at Ecomodder — has taken his 1988 Mazda pickup truck and converted it to run solely on electricity using $6,000 he’d earned as a part-time lifeguard. According to Andrew, the truck reaches a top speed of 55 MPH, sports a range of 40 miles per charge, and has acceleration that’s, “Not that bad.” The mod uses 20 flooded lead-acid batteries (for 120 volts), and a 60 HP, 9-inch electric motor. For most of us, that one major conversion would be enough, but Andrew is cracking away on his second EV mod, working his magic on a 1992 Toyota Tercel and gunning for more speed and a larger motor. Who said kids were lazy these days?

MacBook Air in stores Tuesday, empty pocketbook in your future

January 28, 2008 by imods

Just in case you were really, really anxious to get your hands on the MacBook Air, word on the street is that the little slivers are already in stores, and you’ll actually be able to stroll up into the place and nab them this Tuesday. Of course, old Jobsy has already said as much (“two weeks”), but the Boy Genius is making extra-dextra sure that everyone knows they really will be on the floor come next week. If you’re lucky enough to be employed by Apple as a “Genius,” then you’ll be getting some Air training tomorrow. Hey, it’s never too late to sign up and instantly be accepted for a job… oh, wait, it probably is.

Apple buys iPhone.com for seven figures

January 27, 2008 by imods

It’s hard to accuse Michael Kovatch of squatting the iPhone.com domain for his perpetually to-be-created internet phone company — he snagged it way back in the halcyon days of ‘95 when Jobs was still estranged and the only mobile phones were Zack Morris mobile phones. Well, users visiting iphone.com will finally get sent to Apple’s iPhone page, as the DomainTools Blog is reporting Apple bought it, and for a solid seven figures at that.

How would you change Dell’s XPS One?

January 27, 2008 by imods

Back in October of last year, we all wondered just what impact Dell’s leaked XPS One would really have on the all-in-one PC, nay, computer market, and truth be told, we’re still waiting for something definitive. Sure, the first press shots were emanating with all kinds of sexy (for a Dell), and this thing was teased more than any single hunk of plastic and metal ever should be, but it still maintained a certain aura that kept people anxious for release day. Shortly after going on salein mid-November, reviewers from all walks of life managed to fall innocently in love with Round Rock’s latest, but as with most other XPS machines, we’re fairly certain the discerning crowd that this piece is aimed at will find plenty of reasons to nitpick room for improvement.

If you were given a round-trip ticket to Texas with keys to the XPS One’s design laboratory, what would be your first (and second, and third…) order of business? Are you honestly satisfied with the graphics performance? Is the built-in display that you’re now stuck with up to snuff? Does it really look as good in your humble abode as it did in a classy New York City furniture store? Of course, we fully understand that Dell must have done something right here for ole Walt to highly praise it, and while we’re sure the current incarnation of the One may suffice for many, we want to hear your vision of One.one. Shout it out below
